Solar Eclipses in Spain:
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Celestial Marathon

Spain is about to take center stage in the astronomical world. Between 2025 and 2030, the Iberian Peninsula will witness six solar eclipses, including two total eclipses and one annular eclipse, an unprecedented concentration of celestial spectacles.

For most locations on Earth, a total solar eclipse happens once every 366 years on average, according to NASA. Yet Spain will experience a rare eclipse marathon, turning the country into one of the most privileged places on the planet for eclipse chasers.

Six Eclipses in Six Years

The sequence began with a partial solar eclipse on March 29, 2025, followed by:

The highlight is the extraordinary trio of eclipses in 2026, 2027, and 2028, offering Spain three consecutive years of unforgettable sky shows. Few countries in the world have ever experienced such a concentration of eclipses in such a short time span.

On August 12, 2026, northern Spain will be one of the best places in the world to witness a total solar eclipse. The path of totality will cross the Iberian Peninsula, covering cities such as A Coruña, Bilbao, Zaragoza, and Valencia.

Beyond Spain, the eclipse will also be visible across parts of Greenland and Iceland. For Spain, this marks the first total solar eclipse visible on the mainland in more than a century.

Less than a year later, on August 2, 2027, Spain will again be the stage for a total solar eclipse, this time best observed from the south of the country. Andalucía and the Mediterranean coast will be privileged with one of the longest durations of totality of the century, making Spain once more a global focal point for eclipse tourism.

This event will also be visible from North Africa and the Middle East. In Egypt the eclipse will reach its maximum duration and be visible from archaeological sites such as Luxor.

On January 26, 2028, Spain will witness an annular solar eclipse, popularly known as the “ring of fire.” The Moon will cover the Sun’s center, leaving a brilliant ring of sunlight. While not as dramatic as a total eclipse, it is still a spectacular event. The annular eclipse will move across much of the country in the later afternoon, creating a very unique experience of seeing a ring of fire low over or dipping under the horizon.

A Rare Opportunity for Eclipse Chasers

The last total solar eclipse visible from mainland Spain took place in 1912. More than a century later, the back-to-back eclipses of 2026 and 2027, followed by the annular eclipse of 2028, make Spain the undisputed epicenter of global eclipse tourism. For astronomers, casual skywatchers, and adventure travelers, these events represent a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Planning and Preparation

The Spanish government is already preparing for the arrival of millions of international visitors who will travel to the path of totality. A special committee involving 13 ministries has been created to coordinate logistics, transportation, accommodation, and public safety. Lessons learned from the U.S. eclipses in 2017 and 2024—where road congestion, fuel shortages, and accidents spiked—are being applied to ensure Spain is ready for the challenge.

At the same time, public awareness campaigns are being launched to promote safe viewing practices. Looking directly at the Sun without proper protection can cause irreversible eye damage.

Experiencing the Magic

A total solar eclipse is often described as the most awe-inspiring natural spectacle. As the Moon completely covers the Sun, daylight turns to twilight, temperatures drop, and stars become visible in the daytime sky. For a few breathtaking minutes, the solar corona—normally hidden—reveals itself in all its glory. Shouts of amazement and collective wonder erupt among observers, creating an unforgettable memory shared by millions.

Spain: The Global Destination for Solar Eclipses

With six eclipses in just six years, Spain will become the world’s premier destination for eclipse tourism. The unique combination of historical significance, accessible viewing locations, Mediterranean climate, and rich cultural heritage ensures that travelers will not only experience one of nature’s greatest wonders but also enjoy everything Spain has to offer.

Whether you are planning to stand in the shadow of the Moon in 2026, marvel at the
record-breaking eclipse of 2027, or witness the fiery ring of 2028, one thing is certain: the Spain solar eclipse trilogy will go down in history as one of the most extraordinary astronomical events of our time.
